“Waters of Cyprus, Syria, and Egypt”:
Writing on Empire and its Margins in the Eastern Mediterranean

Yale University Art Gallery
1111 Chapel Street, New Haven
5:30 PM, Thursday, November 20

Empires have left an indelible mark on the cultures and historical legacies of the Eastern Mediterranean. From antiquity until the immediate aftermath of World World II, the region has been under the successive control of some of the world’s most enduring and powerful empires, whose effects resonate strongly, and sometimes violently, in today’s world. Traces of these traditions have also influenced the work of a diverse group of authors whose chronicling of their imperial pasts has shaped the very concept of empire for generations. The event proposes to bring poetry, prose, theater, travelogues, biography, and testimonials in conversation with the current exhibit at the Yale Gallery “Roman in the Provinces: Art on the Periphery of Empire.” With the Roman imperial map as a hinge, the readings will scan the preceding and successive empires (Persian, Hellenistic, Byzantine, Arabic, Venetian, Ottoman, British) as the perspective of “center” and “periphery” shifts, centers become provinces, languages blend even as they vie for lingua franca status, and literary traditions are born, canonized, adopted, appropriated, and resisted.

Free and open to the Public

The event is a collaboration between the Yale University Art Gallery and the Hellenic Studies Program.
