On the occasion of the New Year 2014, this is a call for reflection and
introspection derived from one of the finest pieces of modern Greek
poetry -- "Οι Κακοί Έμποροι" του Δ.Ι. Αντωνίου (1939)

The Bad Merchants
Lord, we were simple men,
we sold merchandise
(and our souls were material
no one bought).
We did not fix prices according to the selvage
measurements were exact by yard and inch
we never sold remnants at half-price.
This was our sin.

We dealt only in merchandise of quality
a small corner in life was all we wanted
the precious things in life take little room.
Now with the same rule by which we measured,
measure Thou us. We have not enlarged our premises.
Lord, we were bad merchants.
