EXCAVATING IN ANCIENT THOURIA IN MESSENIA (PELOPONNESE-GREECE)

Project Description

Participation in the excavation of the Ancient city of Thouria near Kalamata
in Messenia (Peloponnese-Greece). 

Since the eighth century B.C., when the Lacedaemonians dominated Messenia,
Thouria became the most important "perioikos polis" of western Messenia.
Thouria is mentioned by Thucydides in his account of the dramatic revolt of
the Messenian helots against Sparta in 464. The inhabitants of Thouria sided
with the helots and suffered the consequences. After the foundation of
Messene in 369 B.C., Thouria gained independence from Sparta and in later
times, the city was given back to the Spartans by Augustus. The excavations
at the Classical-Hellenistic site begun in 2007. So far they have they have
brought to light significant remains of public and sacred buildings

Students will work at the excavation during week days in the morning and
attend Ancient Greek archaeology and History classes in the afternoon.
Scheduled fieldtrips will take students to sites of great archaeological and
historical importance.

 

Project Size: 1-24 participants

Minimum Age: 18

Experience Required: None

Room and Board Arrangements
Students will share apartments or hotel rooms in Kalamata near the beach.
The program fee also includes snacks that will be taken to the excavation
site for the break that will take place ca. 10am.
