Lucian in Phanar: Nikolaos Mavrokordatos' Dialogic Imagination

Thursday, December 4, 2014 - 6:00pm
Room 128, Barker Center

Nikolaos Mavrokordatos (1670-1730) was a scion of one of the most prominent Phanariot families in Istanbul. A powerful, if ruthless, bureaucrat, an erudite polyglot, an avid book collector and a celebrated patron, he represents a singularly interesting figure of the early eighteenth century, mostly known as the first Phanariot ruler of the Danubian Principalities, and as the author of the first modern Greek novel. This talk will focus on a little-known dialogue of his written in the style of Lucian. The text will be examined within the larger context of the period in which it was produced, also serving as a point of reference in a discussion of the key features of Mavrokordatos’ work: a creative engagement with classical forms and genres, a programmatic alignment with European cultural paradigms, and a firm grasp of the realities and exigencies of the Ottoman status quo.
