·         Elementary Modern Greek I (GRKM 201)

This course aims to develop elementary proficiency in spoken and written Modern Greek, as well as to introduce elements of cultural knowledge. The course will familiarize beginning students with the Greek alphabet and Modern Greek pronunciation rules, as well as basic morphology and syntax, with an emphasis on listening comprehension and reading skills, as well as basic conversational skills. Online language laboratory and Internet assignments required.



·         Elementary Modern Greek II (GRKM 202)

This course aims to develop elementary proficiency in spoken and written Modern Greek, as well as to introduce elements of cultural knowledge. The course builds on Elementary Modern Greek I (GRKM 201) course in order to familiarize beginning students with the Modern Greek pronunciation rules, as well as basic morphology and syntax, with an emphasis on listening comprehension, reading skills, and basic conversational skills. Online language laboratory and Internet assignments required.


·         Intermediate Modern Greek I (GRKM 403)

This course aims to strengthen the concepts learned at the basic level and to introduce students to more complex structures of the Greek language. Specifically it aims to develop intermediate-level proficiency in spoken and written Modern Greek, as well as to introduce elements of cultural knowledge. The course will familiarize students with more complex morphology, syntax, and vocabulary in Modern Greek, with an emphasis on listening comprehension and reading skills, as well as conversational skills. Online language laboratory and Internet assignments required.


·         Intermediate Modern Greek II (GRKM 404)

This course builds on Intermediate Modern Greek I (GRKM 403) and aims to strengthen the concepts learned at the basic and the Intermediate Modern Greek I (GRKM 403) levels and to introduce students to more complex structures of the Greek language. Specifically it aims to develop intermediate-level proficiency in spoken and written Modern Greek, as well as to introduce elements of cultural knowledge. The course will familiarize students with more complex morphology, syntax, and vocabulary in Modern Greek, with an emphasis on listening comprehension and reading skills, as well as conversational skills. Online language laboratory, Internet assignments, participation in the program’s Ongoing Conversation Table “Logos”, and in events organized by the Modern Greek Studies Program, are required.


·         Advanced Modern Greek I (GRKM 453)
This course aims to enable students to attain conversational fluency and to become independent users of the language who deal effectively and with a good deal of accuracy with familiar communication situations. Online language laboratory and Internet assignments required. Prerequisite: GRKM 404 or consent of instructor.


·    Advanced Modern Greek II (GRKM 454)

      This course aims to enable students to attain conversational fluency and to become independent users of the language who deal effectively and with a good deal of accuracy with familiar communication situations. Online language laboratory and Internet assignments required. Prerequisite: GRKM 453 or consent of instructor. This course won a grant by the European Union Centre, University of Illinois, in the Fall 2012 to develop and teach of one-credit hour course that accompany a regular UI course and are taught in an EU language other than English. For this reason an extra hour is added to the teaching of this course. It is a requirement of the course that by the end of the semester students will have to produce a 1,000 word long essay in Greek on topic of their choice from a list of topics to be worked during the lab.


·    Open UG Seminar (GRKM 199): Modern Greece through Literature, Art and Cinema
The course examines political, social and cultural trends cultural trends of Modern Greece, which are reflected in folklore, literature, music, poetry, prose, cinema and popular culture. Emphasis is placed from the 19th century onwards, but references will be made to earlier periods, when necessary.


·    Conflict and Post-Conflict Resolution in Modern Cyprus: Life and Culture Divided by a Wall (Study Abroad Course offered through Global Studies, LAS GLBL 298)

This course explores the relationship between the nation and the state in the Eastern Mediterranean through a focus on the island of Cyprus. What has determined relations between ethnic groups living on the island? How did Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots end up engaged in an ethnic conflict in the 1960s, leading to the invasion of the Turkish army and partition of the island in 1974? What measures have been taken for post-conflict resolution since then? Finally, how is life and culture in a split country like Cyprus divided by a wall? Students will be able to visit the island and enrich their knowledge on its history and culture; see unique ancient, medieval, and modern monuments; and meet with high-ranking state officials, NGO activists, and others who lived through the events of the 1960s and 1970s to hear what happened and how those events changed people’s lives.
