Not All Quiet on the Ottoman Fronts: Neglected Perspectives on a Global War (1914-18)
International Conference
On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the First World War, the History Foundation and Orient-Institut Istanbul will be holding an international conference between April 8-12
Coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the First World War, one of the founding experiences of the 20th century, the conference aims to review the principles on which our knowledge of the subject is based and to bring together new research into the Ottoman Empire’s experience of the First World War -- grounded in the new understanding of military history that has developed over the past 30 years. It will feature more than 70 paper presentations in 20 sessions.
The conference will feature leading scholars such as Benjamin Fortna, Christina Koulouri, Elisabeth Thompson, Engin Akarlı, Eyal Ginio, Fikret Adanır, Fuat Dündar, Hamit Bozarslan, Hans-Lukas Kieser, Heghnar Watenpaugh, Holly Shissler, Margaret Anderson, Mete Tunçay, Mustafa Aksakal, Nathalie Clayer, Oliver Janz, Salim Tamari, Selçuk Esenbel, Şevket Pamuk, Taner Akçam and Wolfgang Gust. It will begin with opening talks at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 9, and close with a concluding panel between 11:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 12.
