[MGSA-L] Greeks Protest Golden Dawn Attack on Communists

The "kind" assumption for "self serving linkage distortion" (sic) is
nothing but a non constructive addition to this fruitful conversation;
especially, when it is served by poor and partial information. For the
democratic world, to which Greece belongs, violence is always equivalent to
violence, and when someone distinguishes "good" from "bad" violence, he is
at best case naive and at worst case politically motivated.

We must keep in mind, that the Golden Dawn entered the Greek public life
only last year. Before, it was only a tiny fascist group, with little if
any connection to the society. On the other hand, for decades we -in
Greece- were living with a unique tolerance to violence within the
University, with occupation of University, public and municipal buildings
by anarchists, and with terrible atrocities such as those in 1995, in 2010
and 2011. Let's not forget that in the minds of many people, the terrorist
organization "17 November" was using "just" (sic) violence! I will never
forget one of my experiences back in 2000 (nobody was aware of the Golden
Dawn yet) when a group of 10-15 anarchists, invaded a room at Panteion
University carrying sticks and crowbars, and attacked the audience of an
event on Cyprus invasion, held by the local Cypriots Students Union. In
fact, they used to do it regularly, sending students to the hospital,
because -according to them- they were "nationalists".

Last, I could not disagree more with the statement that "*the proximate and
overriding collective threat to Greek democracy and*
*civil society in Greece nowadays relates to the shaping of a militant
extreme nationalist frame of mind in a growing segment of the Greek society*".
In contrast, I would say that this is only a symptom of an ill democracy
and the academics -especially the Political Scientists- have to try to find
the roots of the problem and suggest solutions. The only threat for Greece
is a malfunctioning judicial system, a huge and bad public administration,
an unfair and unstable taxation system, the problematic law enforcement and
the selective condemnation of undemocratic acts. When the above are fixed,
the fascists will be nonexistent.
