Greek Australian Professor Examines Multiculturalism
By Sotiria Nikolouli on October 16, 2013 In Culture, Education, News

The Greek-Australian professor of the University of Sydney, Vrasidas
Karalis, during his lecture entitled “After Multiculturalism: Redefining
the Greek- Australian presence in the era of globalization” supported that
multiculturalism as a process of nation building, was suspended in 1997 in
Australia when government was undertaken by Liberals.

The postwar immigrant communities since then were already embedded in the
political, economic and cultural institutional framework of Australian
society, the following reaction due to changes was weak and completely
ineffective.

According to Professor Karalis, the Greek community wasn’t so interested
that many voted for Liberal National Coalition, abandoning traditional
support for the Labor Party. The big question is concerning the concept of
multiculturalism and why it was abandoned so easily.

Professor Karalis said that he named his issue “After Multiculturalism”
because he is looking for a critical examination of the structure of
multicultural ideas and their influence in the Greek Diaspora of Australia.

He additionally noted that in the last 20 years, the main sector of his own
research is in the Modern Greek and Byzantine cultural studies, and more
recently in the study of the New Testament. Karalis teaches the Greek
language, and is chairman of the Department of Modern Greek Studies at the
University of Sydney.
