The Center for Modern Greek Studies, the Nikos Kazantzakis Chair, at San Francisco State University invites you to a lecture by Professor Takis Pappas entitled:

"Europe’s New ‘Weimar Republic’? Legitimation Crisis, Party System Change, and the Rise of Political Extremism in Greece".

Abstract: Ever since what has by now become known as ‘the Greek crisis’ begun in 2008, Greece has teetered between instability and collapse. With a bankrupt economy, the old party system in ruins, and its society in a shambles, this European country is now faced with the rise of neo-populism and political extremism. Is, then, Greek democracy at risk? And what are the prospects for Greek democracy’s future given the current dynamics of the newly emergent system of extreme and polarized pluralism in it?

Bio: Takis S. Pappas (PhD, Yale) is an Associate Professor of Comparative Politics in Thessaloniki, Greece and, at present, a Visiting Fellow at the Department of Political and Social Sciences at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy. Author of two books and many academic articles in leading journals, he has taught and conducted research in several places in Europe and the U.S. His current projects include a comparative study of the rise of populism in postwar Europe and the causes, and repercussions, of the Greek crisis in comparative perspective.
