*The Conservative Revolution in Greece: Austerity Politics and the Future
of Democracy*

November 21, 2013, 6:00–7:30 pm, Room 411, Fayerweather Hall, Columbia
University

A BEI Seminar with Konstantinos Karpozilos, Niarchos Postdoctoral Fellow,
Blinken European Institute.

Since 2009, the Greek crisis has exemplified the limitations of the
Eurozone project and has demonstrated the transformations of the postwar
social consensus. Even though much emphasis is given on the social
consequences of austerity politics, the Greek case also reveals the rise of
conservative politics and the absence of a viable alternative program.

Resistance to austerity often appears cloaked in nostalgia for a harmonious
past, lacking the vision for a radical breakthrough. Why is the Left
trapped in history and why is this a danger for democracy?
