Opportunities: Call For Papers at Fast Forward Festival (Greece)

Media, Politics, Performance: The Role of Intermedial Theatre in the Public Sphere (Athens, 5-6 May, 2014)

Call for Papers: International Symposium

The 1st Fast Forward Festival, organized by The Onassis Cultural Center in Athens, Greece, in collaboration with the Intermediality Group of the International Federation for Theatre Research (IFTR) invites proposals for an International Symposium on May 5-6, 2014 at the Onassis Cultural Center in Athens, Greece.

The symposium will be an intensive, international two-day conference including a scholarly programme of papers and pecha kucha presentations, workshops with practitioners, theatre performances, and an open forum with Greek academics and the public.

We encourage the submission of papers or project statements, manifestos or performative interventions that address the role of live performance in the current phase of the critical transformation(s) of the public sphere.

Possible questions might include:

What is the role of intermedial theatre and performance in a mediatized public sphere?
How does intermedial theatre and performance respond to recent political and social issues, such as economic crisis in Western societies, revolutionary movements in the Arab world, or the growth of corporate and cyber culture? In what ways does intermedial theatre help us to comprehend and confront these issues?
Do citizens and / as spectators play new roles in our mediatized world? What are the functions of immersion, participation, and civic engagement in contemporary theatre and society?
The 1st Fast Forward Festival features performances by:

Rimini Protokoll (Switzerland/Germany)

Berlin (Belgium)

Michele-Anne De Mey and Jaco van Dormael (Belgium)

Rabih Mroué (Lebanon)

Dries Verhoeven (Netherlands)

If you are interested in participating in the Symposium, please send 200-word abstracts and a brief bio by 3 February 2014 to the following address: fffathens2014 at gmail.com
