"How to Be Public: Conflict and Collectivity at the Thessaloniki Film
Festival"

ABSTRACT:

The year 2009 was one of both celebration and crisis for the
Thessaloniki International Film Festival, as it prepared for its 50th
anniversary edition but was also caught up in the broader economic,
political and social crises that have overtaken Greece since the
events of December 2008. Specifically, the state-supported festival
found itself in the middle of a larger debate over the changing
relationship between the state and public culture. Despite festival
organizers' attempts to minimize their effects, this instability and
civil unrest emerged in a number of moments throughout the 2009
festival edition. In this talk, I examine several such moments
together, to consider how the festival serves as a space in which
different forms of publicness and collectivity are negotiated and
enacted, both by the institution and by members of its publics.

BIO:

Toby Lee has a PhD in Anthropology and Film & Visual Studies from
Harvard University. Her dissertation, an ethnographic study of the
Thessaloniki International Film Festival, examines the relationship
between state, citizen and public culture in Greece today. She
currently teaches Modern Greek at the Program in Hellenic Studies at
Columbia University, and also serves as the Director of the
Collaborative Studio program at UnionDocs: Center for Documentary Art
in Brooklyn, NY.
