Interim broadcaster attacked for use of material - Director of first
film shown on DT intends to sue for defamation

Author: Damian Mac Con Uladh

After his 1960 classic I kyria dimarchos (Madame mayor) was shown on
Public Television (DT), Roviros Manthoulis says he plans to sue for
defamation over being identified with the «despicable» channel

The creators of some of the programmes broadcast on the government's
new interim public broadcaster have lashed out at the decision to use
their works on the controversial station.

The director of the vintage comedy that was the first programme shown
on Public Television (DT), which will be broadcast until the
government sets up a replacement for the former national broadcaster
ERT that was shutdown last month, said he plans to sue for defamation
over being identified with the "despicable" channel.

Roviros Manthoulis' 1960 classic I kyria dimarchos (Madame mayor) was
selected as the début broadcast on the new channel, which was launched
early Wednesday as Greek Public Television (EDT) but which became,
simply, Public Televisoin (DT) as the film was being aired. Manthoulis
said that although he couldn't prevent the film being shown, he could
sue those responsible.

"Unfortunately, I cannot stop or forbid it. I can only ask, through
legal procedures, for €20,000 as compensation for defaming me, by
broadcasting my film on a despicable channel," he said, before
likening DT to a "prostitute".

Manthoulis is not the only director to complain. The creators of the
children's show O kapetan Svouras (Captain Whirlygig) said DT was
showing the 1986 series "illegally".

"We have a legal and moral right to decide where, when and how our
work is presented," said Kleoni Flessa and Iraklis Paschalidis, the
director and musician who worked on the series.

For its part, the government claimed that the rights to show the
Manthoulis' film were brought from the copyright owners, Papandreou
SA.

The decision to show I kyria dimarchos/Madam mayor was remarkable
given the chaos in the country's municipalities over government plans
to fire municipal workers and the recent political difficulties in the
coalition, which saw the smallest party, Democratic Left, withdraw.

Starring Vasilis Avlonitis and Georgia Vasiliadou, the film deals with
two rival taverna owners – Aspasia and Anargyros – on an island.
According to the film's summary on IMDB, they quarrel constantly, but
their relationship turns to absolute war when they both decide to
become mayors. During the election campaign they promise whatever
comes to their mind. The war comes to an abrupt end, when Aspasia's
daughter, who is in love with Anargyros' son, stages her suicide so as
to get her mother to withdraw from politics."

It was also during the screening of I kyria dimarchos that the digital
on-screen graphic showing the station's name was changed, from EDT to
DT (see video below).

DT's schedule, which has not been published anywhere, is random,
drawing on old films, blurry documentaries and children's shows.
Manthoulis' film was followed by a 1980s documentary on Andreas
Embirikos, a Greek surrealist poet.

Meanwhile, ERT staff have entered their second month of continuous
broadcasting via a livestream hosted by the European Broadcasting
Union, which has demanded that the station reopen.
