Congratulations to all the winners. The committee also wishes to thank
everyone who submitted work and to recognize its excellence.

First Prize ($500) goes to Patricia Barbeito for her brilliant translation
of Elias Maglanis, *The Interrogation* (excerpt submitted).

Honorable Mention ($100) is given to three exquisite works of translation,
each representing a high level of difficulty for different reasons, and
working well in English. They are (in alphabetical order of the
translator's last name):

1. George Economou, translator of poems by C. P. Cavafy (selection
submitted).

2. Maria Kotsaftis, translator of Michael Spengos, "National Holiday," a
chapter from the book, *The Final Apolog*y. .

3. Anna Stavrakopoulou, translator of the play by Georgios N.
Soutsos, *Alexandrovodas
the Unscrupulous* (excerpt submitted).

This contest is intended to raise the profile of contemporary Greek
literature by bringing it into English and to award translation as a
creative, intellectually meaningful exercise. Established in 1995 and
administered by the MGSA, the Prize honors the memory of Elizabeth
Constantinides (1932-1992 Ph.D. in Greek and Latin from Columbia
University), who taught Modern Greek language and literature at Queens
College of CUNY from 1978 to 1992, wrote on Alexandros Papadiamantis, and
translated twelve short stories by Papadiamantis, published under the
general title Tales from a Greek Island (Johns Hopkins University Press,
(1987). Constantinides served on the Executive Committee of the MGSA and
was awarded the 1987 prize of the Society of Literary Translations in
Athens, Greece.
