In January 2013, Greece was already "literally breathing in the fumes
of its recession."
A year later, Greek Macedonia's largest city, Thessaloniki, is facing an
insidious environmental disaster with long-term public health implications.
Meanwhile, illegal smuggling of heating oil runs rampant. In the face of a
looming environmental and public health crisis, one third of the governing
coalition "New Democracy" party’s deputies (MPs), tabled a motion seeking
easing of tax on heating oil, which was reflexly rejected by Greece's illustrious
government ministers of finance, environment, and health.
N.B. Of possible interest is the recent op-ed (in Greek) by Professor B. Markesinis
spelling out a strategic plan to counter Greece's grueling downward economic spiral. http://www.dimokratianews.gr/print/21302
