[MGSA-L] The shame of the National Herald

For those of us who are political centrists and are committed to the rights
of freedom of the press and of expression the outburst by Mr Gourgouris is
little more than an effort to intimidate a publisher, something which may
have worked in the late and unlamented Soviet Union or in present-day
Islamofascist Turkey, but is repugnant to those who believe in a democratic
system of governance and the values that underlie it.

Greek and Greek-American democrats have long tolerated all manner of views
and items in print; *it has not occurred to us, who are not extremists of
one or another sort, to censor views with which we may disagree, or to
intimidate those who publish them with demands that reflect police-state
state reflexes*.

The publisher of the National Herald would do well, and is fully justified,
to ignore this outburst and go on providing the service his newspaper has
provided to the community for nearly a century.

We *respect the right to freedom of the press and expression of those we
most disagree*, such as Anarchists (even though some of these have sought
to silence those they oppose, for example by burning bookstores in Athens),
Communists (some of whose past actions include a gamut of crimes that pale
those of the military dictators), the neo-Fascist kitsch and violence of
the Golden Dawn party, and corrupt politicians of every stripe. But we
reject definitively the authoritarian reflexes that accrue with such
political alignments.
