*2013 SIMON WIESENTHAL CONFERENCE*
 *Collaboration in Eastern Europe during World War II and the Holocaust *
 DECEMBER 5–7, 2013
 Vienna, Austria

The Vienna Wiesenthal Institute for Holocaust Studies and the Center invite
applications for a conference on complicity and collaboration in World War
II and the Holocaust in the eastern part of Europe. The conference will be
held December 5–7, 2013, in Vienna, Austria.

The conference seeks to highlight new research on the dynamics of
complicity and collaboration in such areas as mass killing and other
atrocities; forced and slave labor; everyday life on the front and under
occupation; plunder, robbery, and expropriation; the radicalization of
local politics during Nazi occupation; and understudied victims.

Applicants interested in presenting a paper should be currently researching
or completing projects exploring the topics and issues listed above,
broadly understood. Proposals on new, previously unpublished research are
welcome from scholars in all relevant academic disciplines, including
doctoral students who have advanced to candidacy. Successful applicants
will be required to submit a copy of their presentation in advance of the
conference for circulation among commentators, other panelists, and
conference participants.

The conference will be conducted in English and German.

*Proposal submission*

The deadline for receipt of proposals is June 2, 2013. Participants will be
selected and notified in June. To propose a paper for this conference,
please send:

(1) a cover letter addressing your specific interests in the study of
complicity and collaboration;
(2) your curriculum vitae; and
(3) an abstract of no more than 500 words for your proposed paper
in a PDF file to Éva Kovács and Béla Rásky at cfp at vwi.ac.at.

Die Konferenz beabsichtigt, die neueren Forschungen zu den Verflechtungen
und zur Dynamik von Komplizenschaft und Kollaboration in Bereichen wie
Massentötungen und Gräueltaten; Zwangsarbeit, Alltag an der Front und unter
der Okkupation; Plünderungen, Raub und Zwangsenteignungen; Radikalisierung
der örtlichen Politik unter der NS-Besatzung sowie bis jetzt wenig
untersuchter Opfergruppen zu beleuchten.

An einer Präsentation ihres Papers Interessierte müssen zur Zeit an einem
Projekt arbeiten, das die oben angeführten Themen und Problembereiche in
einem sehr weit gefassten Sinn erforscht. Exposés aus den Bereichen neuer,
noch nicht publizierter Forschungen aus allen akademischen Disziplinen sind
willkommen, eingeschlossen sind dabei ausdrücklich auch Arbeiten von
Doktoranden und Doktorandinnen. Die zur Tagung eingeladenen Vortragenden
haben eine Kopie des Vortrags noch vor der Konferenz vorzulegen, damit
diese Kommentatorinnen und Kommentatoren sowie Konferenzteilnehmerinnen und
-teilnehmern rechtzeitig übermittelt werden kann.

Konferenzsprachen sind Englisch und Deutsch.

*Einreichungsformalitäten*

Einreichungsfrist für Proposals ist der 2. Juni 2013. Über die eingeladenen
Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer wird im Laufe des Juni 2013 entschieden, die
Benachrichtigung erfolgt umgehend. Um sich für einen Vortrag an dieser
Tagung zu bewerben, senden Sie bitte – in Deutsch oder Englisch –

(1) ein kurzes Schreiben, das Ihr besonderes Interesse an der Erforschung
von Mittäterschaft und Kollaboration darlegt;
(2) einen Lebenslauf;
(3) ein Exposé Ihres vorgeschlagenen Papers (max. 500 Worte)

in einer PDF-Datei an Éva Kovács und Béla Rásky an cfp at vwi.ac.at.
