"The Travelling Players" (O Thiassos) is the masterpiece of Greece's greatest filmmaker, Theo Angelopoulos. As such, it is one of the most important films ever made.  In 1975, when it was shot, many of the world's most ambitious filmmakers where challenging the conventions of both film technique and the expectations of audiences. They were making films that resisted easy assimilation as mere entertainment. Two hundred and thirty minutes long, O Thiassos is filmed in exquisitely complex and lengthy takes.

The film follows the fortunes of a travelling company of actors, staging performances of a pastoral melodrama in the Greek provinces, over a span of a quarter century (1939-1952). The conflicts within the family mirror the outlines of Aeschylus's Oresteia. Even more significantly, the action of the film refracts the tenor of the political environment of Greece during those years. Consequently, we see the emergence of Greek fascism, the occupation of the Nazis, the "liberation" by the British and Americans, the civil war between the Greek communists and conservatives, both within and around the lives of the travelling actors. It is an unforgettable and essential film.

P. Adams Sitney, Professor of Visual Arts, will introduce the film and lead the discussion following the screening.
