Head of foreign ministry archive service guilty of plagiarism
Photini Tomai ordered to pay €20,000 in compensation

Photini Tomai, who heads the foreign ministry's archive service,
enjoys the title of 'consultant ambassador'
An Athens court has ruled that the head of the foreign ministry's
archive service must pay €20,000 in compensation in a book plagiarism
case.

In a 25 January ruling that has only recently become public, an Athens
first instance court found Photini Tomai guilty of "copyright theft"
after she published a childrens' book written by two other authors
under her own name.

Tomai, who enjoys the title of "consultant ambassador" at the
ministry, was also ordered to publish the court's decision in two
national newspapers.

The court ruled that the 2008 book, entitled 1,2,3 ... 11 True
Olympian Stories [1,2,3 … 11 Αληθινές ιστορίες ολυμπιονικών] and
published by Papazisis, was the work of Eleni Kefalopoulou and Aris
Fotiadis.

"The stories of the Olympians of ancient Greece were written after
systematic research on the ancients," says the book's description on
the Papazisis website.

A regular contributor to To Vima newspaper, Tomai has directed the
foreign ministry's archives since 1996. In February, Foreign Minister
Dimitris Avramopoulos appointed her as the country's special envoy for
Holocaust issues.
