[MGSA-L] A Footnote for "Cyprus Issue" scholars

Looking into a reference to an "Australian by the name of Evat,
brother to the Prime Minister of Australia", who was “in Cyprus when
the Turkish attacks took place against the Greeks" (1958), I
discovered that the Australian in question was Clive Raleigh Evatt,
brother to Dr H. V. Evatt, who was Leader of the Australian Labor
Party in the 1950s, but never Prime Minister.

Clive Evatt wrote about what he saw in Cyprus for the The Labour
Monthly. [See “Cyprus: Tory Colonialism Exposed” by Clive Evatt,
Q.C., The Labour Monthly, August 1958, pp. 347-351 online at
http://www.unz.org/Pub/LabourMonthly-1958aug-00347.]  Evatt’s
article serves as a reminder of just how much ground the Greek
Cypriots have lost.

Clive Evatt was the leader of the Australian Committee for the
Self-Determination of Cyprus, and was made a Commander of the Royal
Order of the Phoenix by King Paul of the Hellenes in 1958. However the
“decoration was not conferred until November 1964 because the
Australian government delayed before recommending to Queen Elizabeth
II that he should be permitted to accept and wear it.”
