The Mediterranean Topographies Workshop at the University of Michigan
sitemaker.umich.edu/meditopos
presents "The Other Town,"
a unique documentary film that takes us on a journey through Greek and Turkish history
as experienced through the perceptions, assumptions, and memories of the inhabitants of two specific towns:
Birgi, in western Turkey; and Dimitsana, in the central Peloponnese.
These communities are rich in memories about the “Other,”
built upon a history of occupation (Birgi by the Greek army, Dimitsana by the Ottomans).

The two filmmakers, Hercule Millas and Nefin Dinç, ask some key questions:
How is history taught in schools?
How is the “Other” presented during national festivities?
What do local officials think and say about the conflict and the past?
What are the perceptions and the prejudices of the laymen and of children? and what do the museums exhibit as history?

On Thursday, 29 November, at 6pm director Nefin Dinç presents the film in 2435 North Quad, 105 South State Street, Ann Arbor.

About the director
Nefin Dinç is an Associate Professor at the State University of New York in Fredonia.
She has a Masters in Media and Culture from Strathclyde University, Scotland,
as well as an MFA in Documentary Filmmaking from the University of North Texas.
This is her sixth documentary film.

The event is co-sponsored by the Modern Greek Program.
