AMERICAN FESTIVAL 2012 CONCERT
Elly Paspala and Takis Farazis at the Theater at ACS Athens
Date: Saturday, March 31, 2012, 9 pm
--in support of the John Dorbis Memorial Scholarship at ACS Athens--
In support of its mission to promote Greek - American cultural
exchange, the Institute for Innovation and Creativity and the Theater
at ACS announce a night of mostly American song by two outstanding
artists.
The concert is scheduled as part of the IIC/Theater’s American
Festival 2012 program.
Singer Elly Paspala and composer/pianist Takis Farazis pay tribute to
brilliant American (but not only!) songwriters. The passionate and
often haunting voice of New York - born Elly Paspala, accompanied by
the dynamic expressiveness of Takis Farazis on the piano, remind us of
unforgettable and beloved songs like Somewhere over the Rainbow and
Moon River. Songs written by George Gershwin, Tom Waits, Cole Porter,
Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen are performed alongside songs written by
a younger generation represented by Rufus Wainright and Jamie Cullum.
The show will include two Greek songs by songwriters Panayiotis
Kalantzopoulos and Monika.
The performance inaugurates the Dr. John Dorbis Memorial Scholarship
fund, initiated by friends of Dr. Dorbis. Dr. John Dorbis joined ACS
Athens as teacher of French. He led the school as Assistant
Superintendent and Superintendent of Schools for a total of 35 years,
retiring in 2004. Among his many distinctions was his recognition as
“Superintendent of the Year, Overseas, 1992” bestowed by the American
Association of School Administrators. Dr. Dorbis devoted his life to
ACS Athens and its students for over 45 years. He was an innovator in
education, and as such always looked to bring ACS Athens to the next
level of excellence. He was a beloved and respected mentor to many
students, faculty members, and administrators.
The Dr. Dorbis Scholarship Program has been instituted in memory of
this great man and educator and as a means of promoting his legacy by
honoring graduating seniors who embody Dr. Dorbis’ commitment to
fostering a love of learning, civil and civilized discourse, and
exemplary, ethical leadership.
Join us for an evening of beautiful, heart-warming music as performed
by two extraordinary musicians.
