[MGSA-L] "Ο ΕΝ ΧΡΙΣΤΩ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ ΡΩΜΑΙΩΝ"

Hans Eideneier's prologue to the Greek edition of his
"Ptochoprodromos" -- just published by Panepistimiakes Ekdoseis
Kritis, translated into Greek by Notis Toufexis -- ends in a
fabulously poignant dedication ... "to the anonymous Greek bookseller
in 1966 Istanbul who provided the author with *free* used copies of
Koraes' ATAKTA (1829) and Mavrofrydis' ΕΚΛΟΓΗ ΜΝΗΜΕΙΩΝ ΤΗΣ ΝΕΩΤΕΡΑΣ
ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗΣ ΓΛΩΣΣΗΣ (1866), both of them containing -- and rediscovering
for the Greek nation -- the third and fourth Prodromic poems; the
latter also contained, as an inside front cover (εσώφυλλο), a handmade
'icon' of Ptochoprodromos pleading with Emperor Manuel, who is called
"in Christ King of the Romans" (cf. this message's title) in icon-like
script.

Neither ΠΤΩΧΟΠΡΟΔΡΟΜΟΣ nor ΕΝ ΧΡΙΣΤΩ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ appear in Byzantine
writing, so it is clear that the said 'icon' -- which appears at the
end of the introduction (page xxxvi) -- and εσώφυλλο were produced by
an anonymoys artist some time after 1866: four centuries after the
fall of Constantinople, a local Greek knew enough about the Prodromic
poems and felt close enough to Byzantium to use the title "King of the
Romans" (despite the existence of a contemporary king in Athens, one
may add). And the anonymous bookseller, a "bearer of Constantinople's
Greek civilization", knew enough about the contents of the two books
to donate them to a young philologist inquiring about the Prodromic
poems, "trusting that he would try to continue supporting the
tradition of the uninterrupted Greek intellectual production".

I feel compelled to cite below the last two paragraphs of Prof.
Eideneier's prologue (original untranslated text):

Η ελληνική έκδοση αφιερώνεται σ' εκείνον τον ανώνυμο Έλληνα βιβλιοπώλη
παλαιών βιβλίων της Κωνσταντινούπολης του έτους 1966, ο οποίος, όταν
διαισθάνθηκε το ενδιαφέρον μου για τα Πτωχοπροδρομικά Ποιήματα, μου
χάρισε αυθόρμητα όχι μόνον τον πρώτο τόμο των "Ατάκτων" του Αδαμάντιου
Κοραή (1829), αλλά και τον τόμο "Εκλογή μνημείων της νεωτέρας
ελληνικής γλώσσης" του Δ. Ι. Μαυροφρύδη (1866) με τα αναδημοσιευμένα
τρίτο και τέταρτο ποιήματα της έκδοσης Κοραή. Και όχι μόνον: Μέσα στον
δερματόδετο αυτόν τόμο, του οποίου και τα δύο εσώφυλλα είχαν προφανώς
χαθεί, υπήρχε ως πρώτο εσώφυλλο και η χειροποίητη εικόνα όπως την
βλέπει κανείς παρακάτω, στη σελ. xxxvi.

Ο απόγονος εκείνος και φορέας του πολίτικου ελληνικού πολιτισμού
εξέφραζε με το δώρο του την εμπιστοσύνη του σε έναν ξένο, νεαρό τότε,
επιστήμονα, πως θα προσπαθήσει να συνεχίσει να υποστηρίζει την
παράδοση της αδιάλειπτης ελληνικής πνευματικής παραγωγής.

Indeed in this book's εσώφυλλο one reads the dedication Στον ανώνυμο
παλαιοβιβλιοπώλη της Πόλης.
