Listings of cinema's greatest masterpieces and "must sees" produced
regularly by media outlets and film critics in the US and Europe over the
last 30 years almost invariably include a film by Theo (Theodoros)
Angelopoulos. The Greek director, who died a few days ago in a traffic
accident during a shoot, first earned critical acclaim in the 1970s and
80s, with his personal style of cinematic meditation on historical memory
and political conscience, in films such as Days of '36/Μέρες του '36
(1972), The Traveling Players/Ο Θίασος (1975), and
Megalexandros/Μεγαλέξανδρος (1980). He went on to collect numerous awards
and honors from international festivals, cultural organizations, and film
critics' associations. In the US, he earned the praise of, among others,
Martin Scorsese, David Bordwell and Fredric Jameson.

As a small tribute to Theo Angelopoulos's life and carreer, our program is
hosting a special screening of his film "Ulysses' Gaze" this Wednesday,
February 1 at 8pm in room 160, English Building. The film, which stars
American actor Harvey Keitel, has won the Grand Jury Prize at the 1995
Cannes Film Festival, the Critics Award 1995 by the  European Film Academy,
and has been listed as one of the Top 100 Films of All Time by TIME
Magazine.

Dr. Vassiliki Tsitsopoulou, visiting lecturer in Modern Greek Studies
currently lecturing on "Contemporary Greek culture and film" (GRKM
199<http://www.moderngreek.illinois.edu/courses/>),
will introduce the film.
