Call for Papers: "National Identities in a Global Europe"
The Miami, Florida EU Center of Excellence at Florida International University<http://www.fiu.edu> will hold its annual conference on the topic of "National Identities in a Global Europe" on March 8-9, 2012, and is looking for a few more submissions to present on the topics of renewed nationalism in the EU (What is new about Nationalism in the EU?) and the rise of right-wing/populist parties (How have these exploited the various socioeconomic crises?).
The Spring 2012 conference on National Identities in a Global Europe will explore the salience of nationalism in Europe. Despite much rhetoric about the erosion of nationalism and European transnationalism, national identities have not receded in the EU. In fact, Europeanization has produced counter-movements rooted in cultural affinity and ethno-religious and linguistic belonging, and nationalism has been reasserted by populist politics playing with fears over global economic changes, immigration and European integration.
If interested, please send a title and abstract (300 words) to EUCE co-director Rebecca Friedman<mailto:friedmar at fiu.edu>, copy to thielm at fiu.edu<mailto:thielm at fiu.edu>. Invited paper givers receive a travel stipend, as well as accommodation for 2 nights.
