'The Center for Modern Greek Studies, the Nikos Kazantzakis Chair, at SFSU, cordially invites you to a book presentation

Evdoxios Doxiadis, Alexander S. Onassis Visiting Professor at the Center for Modern Greek Studies, who will be presenting his new book:

'The Shackles of Modernity: Women, Property, and the Transition from the Ottoman Empire to the Greek State, 1750-1850' (Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 2012).

This study explores the evolving relationship between women and property from the latter period of Ottoman rule and the decade-long Greek War of Independence to the first decades of the newly established Greek state, and highlights the impact that modernization had on the economic status of women. Through the systematic examination of numerous legal documents in several regional archives the position of women in Greek societies of the period is illuminated in all its complexity and regional diversity. Special emphasis is placed on women’s ability (in some of the regions examined) to defend their property rights and be active economic agents.
