The Goodtime Girl
Tess Fragoulis

Tess Fragoulis declares love, sex, death, and exile to be among her ongoing literary obsessions. Drawing upon these provocative themes, and her Greek roots, Fragoulis has created The Goodtime Girl— the story of Kivelli Fotiathi, a young girl who is stranded in Piraeus after her home in Smyrna is destroyed by the Great Fire of 1922. Having lost everything — family, friends, social position, and future —Kivelli faces a life as an outcast in a foreign city of danger and refugees. She is living in the broom closet of a brothel, when a man overhears her singing voice and invites her to perform in his local taverna. Kivelli’s vocal talent eventually leads her out of abject poverty and into a recording career, making her a celebrity in Piraeus; yet, while her lot in life and love improves, she longs for the magic of her youth in Smyrna.

Tess Fragoulis is the author of two works of fiction, including the short story collection Stories to Hide from Your Mother, which was a finalist for the Quebec Writers’ Federation First Book Prize in 1998, and the novel Ariadne's Dream, which was long-listed for the Dublin International IMPAC award in 2001. Born in Crete, she has also lived in Holland and Toronto. She now lives in Montreal, where she teaches part-time at Concordia University.
