CONSULATE GENERAL OF GREECE IN NEW YORK

A reading and discussion with the translators of the Norton Anthology, 
"The Greek Poets: Homer to the Present" organized by Karen Van Dyck 
(Columbia University) with Edmund Keeley, Rachel Hadas, and Peter 
Constantine

Karen Van Dyck has directed the Program in Hellenic Studies at Columbia 
since 1988 and been an active member of the Institute for Research on 
Women and Gender, the Center for Literary Translation and the Institute 
for Comparative Literature and Society. She writes and teaches on Modern 
Greek literature and culture, gender, diaspora and translation.
Edmund Keeley served twice as president of the Modern Greek Studies 
Association, and as president of PEN American Center from 1992 to 1994. 
He retired from a long career of teaching English, Creative Writing, and 
Hellenic Studies at Princeton University in 1994. His fiction and 
non-fiction are often set in Greece, where he spends part of each year, 
as well as Europe and the Balkans where he has frequently traveled.
Rachel Hadas is the author of numerous books of poetry, essays, and 
translations. Her latest book of poems is The Ache of Appetite and her 
latest book of prose is about her husband's illness, entitled Strange 
Relation: A Memoir of Marriage, Dementia, and Poetry.
Peter Constantine is a literary translator and editor. His recent 
translations include Sophocles's Theban Trilogy, The Essential Writings 
of Machiavelli, and works by Gogol, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, and Voltaire. 
He coedited A Century of Greek Poetry: 1900-2000, and was awarded the 
PEN Translation Prize for Six Early Stories by Thomas Mann, and a 
National Translation Award for The Undiscovered Chekhov.
