[MGSA-L] Erotokritos translated into Turkish ...

The fact is that Erotokritos was popular and accessible way beyond
Crete; George Seferis' testimony from "Dokimes"  (about Erotokritos'
popularity and availability in the streets of Smyrna a century ago) is
well known, even online*:

Ο Ερωτόκριτος αγαπήθηκε πολύ όχι μόνο στην Κρήτη, αλλά και έξω από
αυτή. Ο Σεφέρης στις Δοκιμές του μαρτυρεί ότι στα παιδικά του χρόνια
στη Σμύρνη οι Ελληνες διάβαζαν με μανία τον Ερωτόκριτο. Στο δοκίμιό
του με τίτλο "Ερωτόκριτος" σημειώνει ότι: "Κυκλοφορούσε, ανάμεσα στις
ταπεινές τάξεις, στα νησιά, τις επαρχίες του ελλαδικού κράτους, στις
μεγαλύτερες μητροπόλεις του Εθνους. Τις περισσότερες φορές το
πουλούσαν γυρολόγοι. Θυμάμαι, παιδί στη Σμύρνη, κάθε απόγευμα, την
ίδια ώρα, την ίδια φωνή στον δρόμο: "Εχω βιβλία διάφορα! Τον
Ερωτόκριτο, την Αρετούσα! Την ιστορία της Γενοβέφας! Την ιστορία της
Χαλιμάς!".
