ADMINISTRATIVE DIRECTOR
PRINCETON, NJ
Job Description: The Administrative Director of the American School of
Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA) is responsible for the
professional administration of a distinguished overseas, non-profit,
educational institution in its U.S. office in Princeton, N.J. Duties
include, but are not limited to, a broad range of institutional
development activities, including events in the U.S., implementation
of a $50 million Capital Campaign, and annual fundraising of more than
$3 million for operations; public relations and communications in
print and online through the School’s website; financial and budgetary
matters; personnel issues; insurance and other operational functions;
implementation of the admissions and fellowships process; coordination
of meetings and governance activities of the Managing Committee and
their representatives from more than 180 North American colleges and
universities; stewardship of two Boards (ASCSA Board of Trustees and
Gennadius Library Board of Overseers).
Oversees a staff of 8 full-time and part-time, in addition to outside
contractors. Reports to the Board of Trustees and works in close
collaboration with the Chair of the Managing Committee and the
Director of the School in Athens. Full-time, 12-month position with
salary commensurate with experience; excellent benefits’ package.
Position available after January 1, 2012.
Qualifications: Seasoned professional with a minimum of five years of
U.S. non-profit administrative experience, including supervisory role,
knowledge of budgetary matters, and successful record of fundraising,
including grants. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills,
both written and oral. Advanced degree in archaeology, classics or
related field and some background in Greece, Modern Greek language,
and with the American School are desirable.
The American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA) is the
preeminent American overseas research institution devoted to the
advanced study of all aspects of Greek culture from prehistory to the
present day. Founded in 1881, ASCSA is the most significant resource
in Greece for North American and international scholars in the fields
of ancient and post-classical studies in Greek language, literature,
history, archaeology, philosophy, and art. It offers two archival
repositories and two major research libraries: the Blegen Library,
with more than 96,000 volumes dedicated to Greece from prehistory to
the late antique period; and the Gennadius Library, with more than
119,000 volumes and archives devoted to post-antique Hellenic
civilization and, more broadly, the Balkans and the eastern
Mediterranean. ASCSA also sponsors excavations and provides centers
for advanced archaeological research at its excavations in the
Athenian Agora and Corinth, and houses the Wiener Laboratory for
archaeological science in Athens. By agreement with the Greek
government, ASCSA is authorized to serve as liaison with the Greek
Ministry of Culture and Tourism on behalf of North American students
and scholars for the acquisition of permits to conduct archaeological
work and to study museum collections.
