Reflections on Aristotle as Poet

Andrew Ford
Department of Classics

The talk will assess my motives, methods, and results in writing a book-length study of a short lyric poem that Aristotle composed for his patron, Hermias of Atanreus. I will summarize some of the books findings and discuss certain trends in recent scholarship on Greek poetry that made me think a study of this text would be of interest.

Andrew Ford specializes in Greek literature and literary history of the archaic and classical periods. His books include Homer: the Poetry of the Past, The Origins of Criticism: Literary Culture and Poetic Theory in Classical Greece, and this year, Aristotle as Poet: the Song for Hermias and its Contexts. He is currently focusing on Greek lyric poetry, especially the odes of classical Greek drama.
