Introduction to the
Archive´s Use as a Scholarly Resource

November 3rd and 4th, 2011


Workshop Description
A partnership with Freie
Universitaet Berlin enables students and scholars from University of Athens to
access the Visual History Archive of the Shoah Foundation Institute for Visual
History and Education of the University of Southern California.
With a collection
of nearly 52,000 video testimonies collected in 32 languages and 56 countries,
the USC Shoah Foundation Institute’s archive is the largest visual history
archive in the world. The Institute interviewed Jewish survivors, homosexual
survivors, Jehovah’s Witness survivors, liberators and liberation witnesses,
political prisoners, rescuers and aid providers, Roma and Sinti survivors
(Gypsy), survivors of Eugenics policies, and war crimes trials participants.
Around 300 of the testimonies accessible in the archive were conducted in
Greece and in Greek language, 601 of the interviewees were born in Greece, 53
of them in Athens. It is a unique and valuable source for research and teaching
in various fields.

This workshop mutually
organized by Freie Universitaet Berlin and the National and Kapodistrian
University of Athenswill provide an insight to
the USC Shoah Foundation Institute´s Visual History Archive and its
potential for academic research.
The workshop will be conducted by Prof. Dr. Hagen Fleischer (Professor for
modern history, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens), Anna
Maria Droumpouki(National
and Kapodistrian University of Athens) and Verena Naegel (Project Manager VHA,
Freie Universitaet Berlin).
Further Andrea Szonyi (Regional Consultant in Hungary for the USC
Shoah Foundation Institute for Visual History and Education)will give
insight information about the USC Shoah Foundation Institute. The
workshop language will be English.
