On his 100th birthday, the Gennadius Library celebrates poet Odysseus Elytis
(1911-1996), recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature. Elytis donated his
most prized works to the Gennadius Library in 1976 and replenished the
collection regularly until his passing.

Celebration

Join us as we celebrate Kathara Deftera, the end of carnival and the beginning
of Lent, a Greek Orthodox national holiday coinciding with the first hints of
spring. Traditional specialty dishes such as cuttlefish stewed in wine, rice
pilaf with mussels, varieties of bean stews and salads, and squid stuffed with
spinach and rice will be prepared by

All proceeds SUPPORT THE GENNADIUS LIBRARY, a national treasure of Greece and
world-renowned center for the study of Hellenism from antiquity to the present
containing some 120,000 rare books, archives, manuscripts, and research volumes
illuminating all periods of Greek history and civilization.
