Ascension Cathedral, Oakland : Club 55 Event – Andrew Mousalimas to Speak October 10th

To those of you who might be interested in the history of WWII Greek/American Operational Group, Andrew Mousalimas will be giving a presentation on October 10. Andy and Greek/USOG veterans have presented the history in various U.S. cities but this is a first on the West Coast.

Ascensions Cathedral's Club 55 has invited Andrew Mousalimas, veteran of WWII Greek/American Operational Group aka Greek/USOG, to address their members and guests.

Monday October 10, 2011
12 PM (Noon)

Andrew will show slides of Greek/USOG personnel including Northern California veterans, and give a brief history of the Greek/USOG missions in Greece and the Dalmatian Islands, Yugoslavia.

His presentation will be followed by a short documentary film about the Greek/USOG produced by the American Hellenic Institute in Washington D.C.

Currently there are six Greek/USOG survivors. Two of them will attend the Club 55 luncheon, namely: the aforementioned Andrew Mousalimas as well as Angelo Lygizos the popular San Jose Restaurateur.

One of the best kept secrets during WWII was the Ethnic Operational Groups which included the Greek/USOG. The Ethnic Operational Groups were founded in 1943 by General “Wild Bill” Donovan, the head of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS).

In September of that year, three OSS officers visited the Greek Battalion at Camp Carson, CO, and requested two hundred volunteers to join the OSS at their training grounds at AREA F near Washington D.C, to prepare for hazardous duty behind enemy lines. Unfortunately the Greek Battalion was disbanded.

During his presentation, Andy will relate why the Greek/USOG was sent to Greece and not the Greek Battalion.

The Greek/USOG was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation by General Dwight D. Eisenhower.
