*
*
*“Dans un pays bizarre”. **Egyptian Jews and the Alliance Israélite
Universelle, 1896-1939*
*
*
The lecture aims at reconstructing the history of the Alliance Israélite
Universelle (AIU) in Egypt from the late nineteenth century to the end of
the 1930s. Although until now scholars have often dismissed the study of
the Egyptian experience of the AIU as scarcely relevant, it will be argued
that on the contrary it is an interesting point of departure for better
understanding the history of the AIU, that of Egyptian Jews and the
processes of social and cultural change that the former underwent in the
early twentieth century. By studying the AIU Egyptian schools of Cairo
(1896-1913), Alexandria (1897-1919) and Tantah (1905-1939), it will in fact
be possible to uncover important aspects of Egyptian Jewish communal and
educational life in the early twentieth century. In conclusion, the aim is
on the one hand to reassess the impact of the AIU over Egyptian Jews, and
on the other to show how it was also through this institution and its
schools that the Jews gradually negotiated for themselves an in-between
identity, that tried to combine European modernity with local practices,
Judaism and bourgeois ideals, a long-lasted tradition of Mediterranean
trans-communalism and twentieth century nationalisms.
