In yet another twist during a week and a weekend of political chaos,
Prime Minister George Papandreou and his opponent Antonis Samaras
agreed during crisis talks with the Greek president late Sunday to
form a new unity government — one that will not be led by Papandreou,
according to The New York Times.

Over the past week, calls for the prime minister to resign have
increased. The embattled politician managed to pull what some
considered a bold move, offering a referendum on the agreement that
effectively forced Samaras to support the deal, and then scuttled the
measure at the last minute.

A possible replacement for the Socialist party leader, who had
maintained that a coalition government would need to be formed in
order to ensure that the EU debt deal would go through, has yet to be
named.

Papandreou and Samaras said further details would be hammered out
Monday, but both men maintained requirements for inking the official
deal. The prime minister had said Samaras would need to agree to a set
of goals related to the impending debt deal; Samaras had said he would
not agree to a new government unless Papandreou stepped down.

“It’s clear this government is prepared to hand over the baton, but it
can’t hand it over into a vacuum,” the prime minister said in a
statement provided to the Times. “It will hand over to the next
government, if we agree and decide on it.”

The agreement would install an interim government to oversee securing
rescue funds for Greece from the EU, and to conduct a general election
before disbanding. Sunday’s talks would suggest the two leaders had
found some common ground in a way forward for the Greek government’s
adoption of the terms of the bailout plan offered by its European
partners, despite deeply unpopular requirements in the deal.
