This workshop will explore what Greek literature -- Ancient, Modern, and
Diaspora -- can offer Translation Studies. It will also be a kind of
translation itself since faculty from Aristotle University in
Thessaloniki and from Columbia University in New York will be joining
forces to create a third space between institutions to discuss these
issues. In this initial meeting Lawrence Venuti will offer a
theoretical framework for thinking more generally about Translation
Studies. Colleagues, then, from Columbia and Aristotle working in the
fields of Greek, English, Comparative Literature and Translation Studies
will address different encounters between Greek and English and how this
engages with issues of translation. Our aim is to generate an exchange
between scholars on both campuses working not only in Greek and English,
but also other languages, literatures, and media. Finally we will set
aside an hour at the end for more practical discussion about future
collaborations between Columbia and Aristotle.
