A series of events in Athens and Thessaloniki celebrate World Poetry
Day on Monday, March 21.

One of the day’s highlights is an event taking place at the Public
bookstore in the capital’s Syntagma Square, starting at 7 p.m. Jointly
organized by the National Book Center of Greece (EKEBI) and the
Hellenic Authors’ Society, the event brings together well-known local
literary folk -- among the participants are Katerina Anghelaki-Rooke,
Vassilis Vasilikos, Kiki Dimoula, Andreas Mitsou, Stratis Paschalis,
Lydia Stefanou and Evgenia Fakinou -- who will read poems by Odysseas
Elytis, given that the current year is dedicated to the Nobel-winning
Greek poet.

A similar event will also take place in Thessaloniki, at the Hirsch
Arcade, while the city’s Entevktirio magazine is organizing a tribute
to C.P. Cavafy on the same day.

Back in Athens, poet Nanos Valaoritis presents a new theory regarding
Homer’s “Iliad” and “Odyssey” at the Hellenic American Union (22
Massalias, Kolonaki) at 8 p.m., while over at the Michael Cacoyannis
Foundation, World Poetry Day will be celebrated through poetry, music
and stand-up poetry.

Finally, in Exarchia Square, young poets and members of the Hellenic
Authors’ Society will conduct poetry readings at the Floral cafe,
beginning at 8 p.m.
