May your learning never end, and may your love for others weave community!

event. Still unable to find what you’re looking for? Try the “advanced
search options” located under each of the three search tabs.
Italian Language Foundation Announces Dante Award for Excellence in
AP Italian Language Studies
________________________________
The Italian Language Foundation is offering a financial award for
students who score well on The College Board’s Advanced Placement Test
in Italian Language and Culture, or AP Italian.
The Dante Awards for Excellence are unrestricted and will be given to
students who score a four or a five in the AP Italian exam, which will
be given in May 2012. The amounts of the award are $200.00 for
students who score a five and $100.00 for those who score a four.
The Dante Award for Excellence is part of the ILF’s programming to
build participation in the United States and abroad in AP Italian,
which is being reinstated beginning in the fall of 2011. The
Foundation is also currently underwriting the cost of workshops for
teachers of high school Italian who will ultimately be certified to
train other teachers in Italian language and studies. The workshops
are administered by ACTFL. The first two days of the intensive
workshops were held at the Columbus Citizens Foundation in New York
City, on May 14 and 15, and the final two days will be held at the
Generoso Pope Foundation, in Tuckahoe, New York, on August 27 and 28.
More information is available at www.ItalianLanguageFoundation.org.
Albright and Hagel Voice Support for Language Funding
________________________________
In a July 15 Op-Ed piece in USA Today, Former Secretary of State
Madeleine Albright and former Republican Senator Chuck Hagel, both
professors at Georgetown University, made the case for Title
VI/Fulbright-Hays funding, calling it "vital to maintaining and
enhancing our critical workforce needs."
"Our years of work in diplomacy and national security have made very
clear to both of us the critical need to maintain and expand the cadre
of Americans who have studied the history and politics of countries
who affect our well-being. Specifically, the United States' ability to
both confront challenges and exploit opportunities relies heavily on
Americans being able to understand and speak less commonly taught
languages."

High enrollment leads to Mandarin Chinese degree program at URI
The University of Rhode Island has been approved for a bachelor's
degree program in Mandarin Chinese after classes in the language have
proved popular since their inception in 2004. "Economically,
politically, culturally and socially, our students are very astute
about emerging trends," said Winifred Brownell, the dean of the
College of Arts and Sciences. Advanced students can participate in
URI's Chinese Language Flagship Program, one of nine such federally
funded programs in the U.S. devoted to Mandarin Chinese. The Providence
