The "star of David" is an ancient symbol, found all over the
world. It became one of the symbols used in Kabbala, and its
use followed the spread of Kabbalistic tradition. Its use
was meant to be an apotropaic method against evil.

It took a specifically Jewish meaning after about 1700, when
it was used as his house insignia by a very rich Jew,
perhaps Rothchild.

When Kabbalistic ideas became less influential, it was also
used as decoration.

The occasion you have seen is very interesting, because its
use is apparently not by folk persons, but by the people who
built the church.

Searching Google images for

islam "star of david"

or for

buddhism "star of david"

leads to more examples.
