The Modern Greek Program at the University of Michigan
has posted on its web site "Stopping for Melisma,"
the 2002 Thomas E. Leontis Lecture
given by Professor Gail Holst-Warhaft (Cornell) at The Ohio State University:

Thomas Moore has suggested that "stopping for melisma" gives the soul its reason for being.
The author of this talk, which is illustrated with several musical examples,
explores how the term 'melisma' might be applied to poetry, and to Greek poetry in particular.
Can one stop for melisma in a poem? What form do such pauses for elaboration take?
And if we can establish melisma as a common poetic technique,
what are its effects on the listener and what are the consequences of its absence?
