How Scotch whisky has become
in many contexts of Greek social life a symbol of ‘Greekness’, national
identity, modernity and middle class? How are global commodities adapted and
adopted by cultures and what are the consequences of transnational
capitalism? Is the circulation of commodities affecting the cultural
identity of contemporary consumers in Greece and to what extent? By
following Scotch within the contexts of Greek cinematography, popular music,
marketing and consumption in general this lecture takes an ethnographic
stand to the perceptions of foreign, Western, imported and global goods in
order to understand how the career of Scotch whisky has become more
successful than other beverages. Drawing from a wide range of sources,
archival work, and anthropological fieldwork, the author will be presenting parts of his PhD research.
