LEVENTIS FOUNDATION AWARDS GRANT FOR MEDIEVAL GREEK SUMMER SESSION AT
THE GENNADIUS LIBRARY
The Gennadius Library of the American School of Classical Studies at
Athens is very pleased to announce that the A.G. Leventis Foundation
has generously awarded funding to underwrite the costs of its 2011 and
2013 summer sessions focused on the teaching of Medieval Greek.
Every other year since 2005, the Gennadius Library has offered a
summer language program in Byzantine Greek, a subject rarely taught in
American, European or other international academic institutions. This
grant will enable up to 12 qualified students or scholars to
participate in this program with scholarships that will provide free
tuition and housing. The month-long Summer Session for Medieval Greek
will be taught in 2011 from June 27 to July 26. The objective is to
familiarize students who have a sound foundation in Classical Greek
with Medieval Greek language and philology by exposing them to primary
sources, different kinds of literary genres, paleography and epigraphy
as well as bibliographic and electronic tools, drawing on the
resources of the Gennadius Library. The program also includes site and
museum visits. The two Professors leading the session in 2011 are
Professor Alexander Alexakis, University of Ioannina, and Professor
Eustratios Papaioannou, Brown University.
The American School is very grateful to the A.G. Leventis Foundation
for their support to train young scholars and expose them to the
medieval monuments and relevant museum collections in Greece, and to
stimulate post-classical Hellenic studies.
