				Abstract

The Internet as we know it is about to undergo a drastic change. This
change is necessary since the existing version of the Internet Protocol is
considered close to run out of address space. As a result, a new version of
the Internet Protocol (IPv6) was designed. Currently Europe and Asia are
major sources of research funding on next generation Internet and next
generation networks. This research attempts to validate and resolve issues
around IPv6 and its new functionalities by building large-scale testbeds
such as 6NET (www.6net.org) linking all NRENs with a native IPv6 network,
and Euro6IX (www.euro6ix.org) creating six IPv6 European Internet Exchanges
(IXs). In the last two years Europe has spent $180M in research on IPv6.
The FP6 plan for 2003-2006 calls for including IPv6 in all research projects.
The total budget is $3.3B. Research on topics such as mobility, security,
transition and management combined with GRID and 3G are the main focus. The
talk will summarize the advantages of IPv6 and why there should be more work
carried on IPv6 in US research institutions.

Speaker's Biography

Latif Ladid has held various managerial and marketing positions at various
corporations in Europe and the Middle East. In 1999 he joined IPv6 pioneer
Telebit in which Ericsson later acquired a major share. With strong support
from the IETF Next Generation NG, IPv6 and NG Transition Working Groups and
the IPv6 Deployment group, Latif Ladid initiated the foundation of the IPv6
Forum in May 1999. Currently he serves as president and spokesperson of the
IPv6 Forum.
