NP Scope Expansion Bill Is Moving Forward: Urge NO Vote on AB 890!

CMA and ACCMA are urging physicians to contact your Assemblymember and urge
them to vote NO on AB 890!

 

Introduced by Assemblymember Jim Wood, DDS, AB 890 grants full practice
authority to nurse practitioners (NP), removing critical patient protections
by allowing NPs to practice without physician supervision. AB 890 lacks
critical details related to nurse practitioner competency requirements,
scope limitations, requirements to actually serve underserved populations or
regions, and many other details. As it stands, it is a dangerous bill to
move forward and will still do nothing to improve access to health care in
California.

 

Despite these concerns, the bill has passed out of the Assembly
Appropriations Committee and will be heard on the Assembly Floor as early as
this week!

Talking Points 

 

*	AB 890 would remove critical patient protections by allowing nurse
practitioners (NPs) to practice independently without physician supervision
and without requiring the same level of education and training as a
physician.

 

*	As amended, AB 890 not only removes supervision, but it restricts
doctors from running their own practices as they see best for patient care,
by removing their ability to determine what their employees can do.

 

*	AB 890 removes any requirement that nurse practitioners establish
competency before they practice without physician supervision.

 

*	AB 890 requires a 2-3 year "transition to practice" but doesn't
require that period of time to be spent under an actual physician.

 

*	AB 890 is not guaranteed to increase access to care, as there is
still no incentive or mandate for independent nurse practitioners to
practice in underserved regions or serve underserved patient populations
