Good News from New York
The American Academy of Emergency Medicine<http://www.aaem.org/>

The order<http://www.aaem.org/secure/repository/files/docs/1255377270-AAPS_NY_case_MSJ_9_17_09.pdf> from a federal district court in NY represents a victory for residency training in EM. The American Association of Physician Specialists (AAPS), sponsors of the BCEM examination, filed suit against numerous NY state officials to force them to recognize BCEM diplomates as "board certified," despite the fact that eligibility for the BCEM exam requires no formal training in EM.

Tom Scaletta, our Immediate Past President, provided testimony, and our Academy provided much documentation in support of the defendants (i.e.: NY state officials). The court dismissed this case on summary judgment. We expect AAPS to appeal.

AAEM monitors the activities of AAPS, and we attempt to be present at any hearing in any state where AAPS argues that residency training in EM is unnecessary. It's embarrassing that we must still argue that EM is a legitimate specialty requiring residency training before one may call oneself "board certified." We expect a similar result in every state where AAPS makes a similar argument, and we will always be there to advocate for the academic integrity of EM.

Over the balance of your career, you can rely on your Academy to always stand up for your practice rights and to always stand up for the academic integrity of emergency medicine.
