AAEM Young Physicians Section (YPS) will have its 1st Annual
YPS Lecture featuring Jesse M. Pines, MD MBA MSCE FAAEM Dr. Pines's ever
popular lecture "ED Crowding: Causes, Consequences and Solutions"
will be presented at the 15th Annual Scientific Assembly, Monday, March 2,
2009, at 3:30pm in Phoenix, AZ. Dr. Pines will discuss the current state of
knowledge on the causes, consequences, and proposed solutions for emergency
department crowding in the United States.
The lecture will include topics about both macroeconomic and
microeconomic trends that have led to increased demand for ED services and how
hospital economics often guide administrators to maintain the status quo (i..e.
crowding) instead of ensuring efficient ED service delivery.  In this context, we will discuss how crowding
and emergency care in general may be improved through local solutions (such as
improved efficiency and reduced

variability) that may be a win-win. In addition, we will
address policy solutions aimed at increasing accountability for waiting and
boarding times, and how pay-for-performance may affect crowding in the future.
