A federal court in Miami last week approved a settlement in a lawsuit brought by physicians against the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association and more than 30 affiliated plans and subsidiaries. Proposed last year, the settlement requires the affected health plans to pay more than $130 million in physician claims and nearly $50 million in attorneys' fees. The American Medical Association said the settlement resolves “contentious business practices” related to coding guidelines, prompt payment, medical necessity, physician credentialing, disclosure of fee schedules, claims procedures and payment policies. The AMA and 27 other medical societies will assist in enforcing the settlement of the class-action lawsuit, which involved about 90,000 physicians.
