Reaffirming the AAEM Mission

I received two letters over the past several weeks
expressing concern over my president’s column in the September/October issue of
"Common Sense", “Fairness and the AAEM Job Bank.” I assume many other
members had similar concerns but did not write.

I merely expressed my opinions in this article, especially
my opinion that we should publish most job advertisements submitted to our home
office. This reflects no dilution of our mission. Our board continues to
strongly support advocacy for the practice rights of emergency physicians, as
well as advocacy for the academic and professional integrity of emergency
medicine. The latter two goals reflect our strong efforts in support of proper
board certification and our opposition to illegal practice models in emergency
medicine.

I do not believe we should publish advertisements submitted
by practices that violate state corporate practice of medicine laws. I also
believe we should not publish advertisements directed at non-ABEM or AOBEM
physicians because of the focus of our membership.

Currently, we do publish advertisements submitted by
practices that have not met our “fairness” designation. I believe we should
clearly designate advertisements meeting our “fairness” designation. I also
believe we should develop “fair employer” criteria, and designate those
advertisements submitted by fair employers. I realize some of our members
believe that a fair employment model does not exist. I disagree with that
sentiment. This would exclude virtually every academic practice.

As you all know, AAEM functions as a “wide open” democracy. Our
board cares about your opinions. Please let us know if you have any remaining concerns
about my article or this email. You can easily reach me at lweiss at aaem.org or
info at aaem.org. I will share your concerns with our board when we decide these
issues.

Thank you for your continued support of AAEM. I hope to see
you at our Scientific Assembly in Phoenix
next March. I welcome you to our board meeting on the evening of March 1, 2009,
and I welcome the opportunity to meet with as many of our members as possible.
