CMS urges providers to review NPI data fields

Source: American Hospital Association ( http://www.aha.org )
Date: November 28, 2007

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services this week urged health care providers to
review publicly disclosable data fields in their National Plan and Provider Enumeration
System records. If Social Security numbers were reported in these disclosable fields,
they should be replaced with the correct data. CMS is currently suppressing nine-digit
numbers from most disclosable fields in the National Provider Identifier registry to
prevent any misplaced Social Security numbers from being publicly displayed.
